On the initiative of the United Nations, International Anti-Corruption Day is celebrated every December 9.
It was opened on 9 December 2003 at a high-level political conference in Mérida, Mexico to sign the UN Convention Against Corruption (adopted by the UN General Assembly on 31 October 2003). The World Bank estimates that one trillion dollars are spent worldwide each year. According to the International Monetary Fund, corruption contributes approximately $ 1.5 trillion annually to the global economy, or 2% of global GDP.
On this occasion, on December 3, 2024, a round table was held by Professor Feruza Sapayeva of the Department of World Literature of UzSWLU with the participation of students of English Philology on the topic “corruption - the kushanda of development”.
"Our goal is to build an honest and fair society. Therefore, every citizen must contribute to the fight against corruption. It starts with simple values such as striving for justice, not turning a blind eye to illegal actions and being an example for others," says professor Feruza Sapayeva in her speech.
It talked with students about the serious problem of corruption, which becomes an obstacle to the development of society, violates the principles of the rule of law and justice, the basics of effective struggle against it – strict enforcement of laws, ensuring transparency in public administration, raising citizen awareness and promoting the legal consciousness of each person, strengthening the spiritual foundation of society. During the event, a thematic video was brought to the attention of students and was widely discussed.
