About the programme

The Foreign Language and Literature programme prepares qualified teachers of foreign languages for Uzbekistan’s school system. It is a practice-oriented teacher-education programme: graduates receive the qualification of teacher of their chosen language and are prepared to teach foreign language and literature in general secondary schools, specialised schools and extracurricular education.

The programme develops advanced practical command of the target language together with systematic training in pedagogy, language-teaching methodology, international standards of language teaching and assessment, and the literature and culture of the target-language countries. From the first year, students also study a second foreign language.

Studies last four years in full-time form and comprise 240 credits (7,200 academic hours). A distinctive feature of the programme is its school-based practice model: from the third semester onwards, students follow the “4+2” scheme — four days of theoretical and practical study at the university and two days of supervised practice in general secondary schools each week. In total, qualification practice accounts for 36 credits (1,080 hours) and includes introductory, pedagogical and pre-graduation practice.

Intended learning outcomes

In line with Level 6 of the National Qualifications Framework, graduates are able to:

1. use all types of speech activity in the foreign language — listening, reading, speaking and writing — in professional contexts;
2. express ideas, arguments and conclusions logically, accurately and coherently in oral and written form, observing the norms of the target language, and work with academic texts;
3. understand professional documents in an additional foreign language and use it sufficiently for professional purposes;
4. plan lessons in line with state educational standards and curricula, adapting programmes to learners’ needs and applying differentiated teaching methods;
5. ensure teaching effectiveness through appropriate use of ICT, active teaching methods, project- and team-based work, and effective classroom communication;
6. assess learning outcomes using a variety of methods and tools, analyse results and use them to adjust lesson plans and provide constructive feedback;
7. create a safe, respectful and developmentally supportive learning environment, taking account of learners’ age, cultural and individual characteristics;
8. cooperate with colleagues and with learners’ parents (or guardians) in supporting learners’ development;
9. conduct research on foreign language and literature and on language-teaching methodology, analyse scholarly sources systematically and apply research results in practice;
10. develop and adapt teaching and linguistic learning materials, including new educational resources;
11. apply critical thinking in the foreign language, uphold professional ethics, respect children’s rights in line with national and international legal instruments, and demonstrate a value-based commitment to inclusive education;
12. pursue continuous professional development through in-service training, peer lesson observation and participation in professional seminars.

Career prospects

Graduates are qualified for:

• teacher of foreign language and literature in general secondary and specialised schools (in accordance with the relevant professional standard);
• instructor of extracurricular (club-based) foreign-language education;
• school leadership and management (in accordance with the professional standard for school directors);
• head of a subject cabinet or tutor in general secondary, professional and higher education institutions.

Graduates may also pursue careers in research on foreign languages and literature and continue their studies at Master’s level.

Admission requirements

Admission is competitive and based on the state examination procedure of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Applicants must hold a certificate of complete general secondary or specialised secondary education.
