History of the Department:
The Department of General Linguistics was established in 1970. Many prominent scholars and experts have worked in this department. It is one of the most capable and historically significant departments at the university.
To train highly qualified personnel in the field of the history and theory of linguistics in Uzbekistan, the Department of General Linguistics was created in 1970 within the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages. The department has addressed scientific problems and issues of world linguistics.
The first head of the department was Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor A.S. Sodikov, who led the department from 1970 to 1991.
From 1992 to 1995, the head of the department was Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, A.R. Rustamov.
In 1996-1997, the head of the department was Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor A.V. Redkin.
From 1997 to 2011, the department was again headed by Associate Professor A.S. Sodikov.
In 2009, Associate Professor A.S. Sodikov organized the "Linguistic Seminar" for higher educational institutions in the field of philology in Uzbekistan under the Department of General Linguistics. A special library on linguistics was established for this purpose.
Since 2011, the department has been headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor R.U. Madjidova.

Main Goals of the Department:

  • To study and implement new directions in modern linguistics and language theory.

Main Tasks of the Department:

  • Conduct lectures and seminars on linguistics at a high methodological and professional level in accordance with state educational standards;

  • Supervise students' graduation theses, master's dissertations, and independent research on language theory, general linguistics, and new linguistic directions;

  • Fairly assess student knowledge based on the credit-module system;

  • Develop and approve educational programs in linguistics in the prescribed order;

  • Prepare and publish textbooks, study guides, and methodological materials, and discuss scientific works in these fields;

  • Create conditions for conducting research work for the department's faculty members;

  • Discuss completed scientific research and recommend them for further stages;

  • Ensure the integration of education, science, and industry;

  • Review and approve individual plans of the department's faculty for educational, methodological, research, cultural-educational, and organizational work;

  • Study and disseminate the experience of experienced professors, master new pedagogical and information technologies, and implement them in the educational process.

  1. Project "Creating Textbooks and Study Guides in English for Theoretical Subjects for Master's Specialties in Foreign Philology Based on Intercultural and Communicative Approaches" (2015-2017).

  2. Practical Project "Creating Multimedia Products for Intensive Teaching of Uzbek Language for Foreign Language Speakers."

Notable Events and Visits:

  • In October 2021, Professor R.U. Madjidova, Professor Q.O. Saparova, and Professor X.S. Muxitdinova visited the Russian-Tajik University (Tajikistan) and participated in the international scientific-practical conference on "The Role of Innovative Education in the Development of Russia and Tajikistan."

  • In November 2021, Professor R.U. Madjidova visited Belarus and Russia to establish scientific and innovative relations between Uzbekistan and Belarus and to develop international scientific cooperation in Russia.

  • In January-February 2024, faculty members of the department visited universities in Colombia and Indiana to exchange experience on teaching Uzbek and English languages.
