History of the Department:
The Korean language started being taught as a second foreign language at the Tashkent State University of World Languages in 1995. From the 2017-2018 academic year, the "Philology and Language Teaching" (Korean language) program was introduced as a specialized field in the Faculty of Translation Theory and Practice, with a total of 200 students in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years from Uzbek and Russian-speaking groups. From the 2021-2022 academic year, the Department of Korean Language Theory and Practice was incorporated into the Faculty of Oriental Philology.
In the 2021-2022 academic year, there were 492 students in the 4th year, 670 in the 3rd year in the 2022-2023 academic year, 361 in 2023-2024, and 820 students in 2023-2024 enrolled in the program. In addition, over 170 students across the university have been enthusiastically learning Korean as a second foreign language.
Department Location: 4 Zakovat Street, Uchtepa District, Tashkent
Department Composition: 25 local faculty members and 11 Korean specialists, as well as 12 volunteers from the KOICA international cooperation organization.
Scientific Activities: Previously, the department had professional teachers such as Associate Professor Pak V.I., Associate Professor Ten Yu.P., Senior Teacher Khamidova S., and volunteer teachers from the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) including Park Yong In, Pek Min Hee Yong, Shin Mi Gyong, and Lee Nan Yong. Korean specialists such as Pek Keum Nan, Seol Von Te, and Kim Dae-yong have also been involved. The recruitment of foreign specialists has been systematically organized, and every year qualified experts are brought from South Korea. Collaborations have been established with the KTeachers Association, Sunchon University, KOICA, the Korea Foundation, and the Korean Educational Center.
Teachers at the Department: Aslonova Husnida, Bobomurotova Sadokat, Makhmatkulova Yayra, Khujayeva Ugiloy, Azimova Amira, Azimova Parizod, Haydarov Jasur, Sherov Rasul, Akhmedov Uktam, Sobirov Elbek, Sagatova Muhabbat, Salimova Sabina, Turayeva Feruza, Alikulova Feruza, Amonova Dilafruz, Abdulloyeva Kamola, Nazirova Navruzaxon, Sa’dullayeva Ozoda, Akramova Shokhsanam, Toshturdiyeva Shokhista are among the active faculty members.
So far, local teachers have successfully published the first and second parts of the "Korean Language Textbook" for students learning Korean with the help of the Uzbek language through the cooperation of KOICA. The book "Uzbek Folk Tales" has also been translated into Korean with the support of KOICA. In 2025, an anthology of essays in Korean, a teaching manual, and a textbook on country studies will be published.
Cultural Activities: Students in the Korean language program not only learn the language but also become closely acquainted with Korean culture and traditions. Cultural days organized by the Korean Embassy, Korean film weeks, cooking contests, K-POP dance competitions, and other events are regularly held. Students actively participate in these events. Additionally, the Korean Cultural Center hosts the KIMCHI Festival where students get the opportunity to prepare kimchi themselves.
The university organizes Korean national holiday events such as Chuseok (harvest festival) and Hangul Day (the day the alphabet was created). The department’s instructors teach students about Korean culture through open lessons, national costumes, and national dances.
Collaborating Organizations: The department cooperates with various schools including the 81st Secondary School, 197th Secondary School in Uchtepa District, the 59th Chinese-Korean Specialized School in Shayxontohur District, and the Oriental Studies Lyceum.
International Partners: KOICA, KF, Korean Education Center in Tashkent, Keimyung University, Duksung Women’s University, Soong-sil University, Suncheon University, DongMyong University, Chung-Ang University, Busan University of Foreign Studies, Joongbu University, Seoul Education University, and Chonnam University.
Each year, 12 students are sent for internships abroad.

Priority Areas of the Department: Korean language education, Korean culture experience, international relations.
Courses Offered: Foreign Oriental Language, Country Studies, Reading and Writing Practice, Oral Speech Practice, Oriental Language Teaching Methodology, Literature of the Studied Country, History of the Studied Country, Listening Comprehension, Translation Basics, Main Oriental Language, Mass Media Language, Simultaneous Interpretation, and Theoretical Studies of the Main Oriental Language.
Bachelor’s Degree Programs: The Bachelor’s program in Philology and Language Teaching (Korean Language) offers both day and evening courses, with a total of 826 students enrolled.
Master’s Degree Programs: The Linguistics (Korean Language) Master’s program has 27 students enrolled.
Achievements of the Department: Students of the department actively participate in prestigious competitions organized by the South Korean government and achieve excellent results. In the second semester of the current academic year, 6 students received GKS scholarships. In 2019, the third-year student Qahramonova Hamidakhon won the national stage of the Korean Quiz contest, securing first place in the final round in Seoul. In 2021, Muzaffarov Zafarjon Muzaffarovich won first place among Asian countries in the “QUIZ ON KOREA” competition. Additionally, over 30 graduates, including Samadova Muattar, Noila Ahrarova, Jahongir Yokubov, Elyor Kodirov, Ibratbek Khadjiyev, and Abdullaeva Nilufar, are currently pursuing Master’s and PhD degrees in South Korea.
International Project: On October 14-21, KOICA’s “Korean Culture Volunteer Program in Tashkent” project brought a delegation led by Kim Bok-Hee to Uzbekistan, where they held meetings with KOICA Uzbekistan’s director and the university’s rector.
Department Achievements: The department offers financial assistance to students, including funding for one student’s tuition in the 2024-2025 academic year. Two students have received department scholarships for academic excellence and community involvement, along with a 6-month TOPIK course recommendation.
