History of the Department:
At Uzbekistan State University of World Languages, Korean has been taught as a second foreign language since 1995. Starting from the 2017–2018 academic year, a separate major in “Philology and Language Teaching (Korean Language)” was established under the Faculty of Translation Theory and Practice, with a total of 200 students from Uzbek and Russian groups studying in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years. Since the 2021–2022 academic year, the Department of Korean Language Theory and Practice has been included in the Faculty of Oriental Philology.
In the “Philology and Language Teaching (Korean Language)” program, 492 students studied in the 4th year during 2021–2022, 670 students in the 3rd year during 2022–2023, 361 students in 2023–2024, and 820 students in 2023–2024. Currently, 847 undergraduate students and 29 master’s students are studying Korean. Additionally, more than 200 students across the university are learning Korean as a second foreign language with great interest.

Department staff: 24 local teachers and professors, 8 Korean specialists, and 16 KOICA volunteer instructors.
Scientific activity:
Previously, the university employed professional educators such as PhD, Associate Professor Pak V.I., PhD, Associate Professor Ten Yu.P., and senior lecturer Khamidova S. In addition, volunteer teachers from KOICA — Park Yong In, Pek Min Hee Yong, Shin Mi Gyong, and Lee Nan Yong — worked successfully. Korean specialists such as Pek Keum Nan, Seol Von Te, and trainee Kim Dae-yong from Jungbu University have also worked at the department. The recruitment of foreign specialists has been established systematically, and every year highly qualified experts from South Korea are invited. The department cooperates with the KTeachers Association, Sunchon University, KOICA International Cooperation Organization, Korea Foundation, and the Korean Education Center. Within this cooperation, online professional development courses, summer training, and scientific scholarships in South Korea are regularly organized.

Local Korean language teachers, in cooperation with KOICA, have prepared and published the first and second parts of the textbook “Korean Language” for students learning Korean through Uzbek. With KOICA’s support, the book “Uzbek Folk Tales” was also translated into Korean. Teaching manuals such as “Country Studies” and “TOPIK Essay Collection” were published by faculty members Sobirov Elbek Davron o‘g‘li, Maxmatqulova Yayra Qudratovna, Bobomurotova Sadoqat Mirzayevna, Sherov Rasul Ravshanovich, Azimova Parizod Azamat qizi, and Xo‘jaeva Ugiloy Tagoymurotovna.
Spiritual and cultural activity:
Students of the Korean program not only learn the language but also become closely acquainted with Korean culture and traditions. Every year, the Korean Embassy organizes cultural days, Korean Film Week, Korean national cuisine competitions, and K-POP dance contests. The “Kimchi Festival” is regularly held by the Korean Cultural Center, where students can make kimchi themselves.
The university celebrates Korean national holidays such as Chuseok (Harvest Festival) and Hangul Day (Korean Alphabet Day). The department’s mentors organize sports and cultural events such as calligraphy and kimchi festivals. Open lessons are also held to introduce Korean traditional clothing and dances.

Each year, 15 teachers and 15 students are sent for internships.

Courses taught: Eastern foreign language, Country Studies, Reading and Writing Practice, Speaking Practice, Methods of Teaching Oriental Languages, Literature of the Studied Country, History of the Studied Country, Listening Comprehension, Basics of Translation, Main Oriental Language, Media Language, Simultaneous Translation, Theory of Oriental Languages.
Undergraduate program:

“Linguistics (Korean Language)” — 29 students.
Achievements:
Students of the department actively participate in prestigious competitions held by the Korean government and achieve great results. In the current academic year, 6 students won GKS scholarships. In 2019, third-year student Qahramonova Hamidaxon won the Republic stage of the Korean Quiz and took first place in the final held in Seoul. In 2021, Muzaffarov Zafarjon Muzaffarovich won first place among Asian countries in the “Quiz on Korea.” More than 30 graduates, including Samadova Muattar, Noila Ahrarova, Jahongir Yoqubov, Elyor Qodirov, Ibratbek Khadjiyev, and Abdullaeva Nilufar, are studying in master’s and doctoral programs in South Korea. Umarov Abdulaziz earned a PhD in South Korea and now works at Amity University.
From October 14–21, a KOICA project titled “Korean Culture Volunteer Program in Tashkent” was implemented by the KIDC organization under the leadership of Ms. Kim Bok-Hee (Project Manager). During the visit, the delegation met with the KOICA Uzbekistan Office Director Shin Myung Seop, the rector of UzSWLU, and school principals. The project value was 1.12 million USD, and over 2.5 years, it will include the construction of a Korean Culture Center, as well as Taekwondo, K-pop, and Samulnori clubs at UzSWLU and Tashkent schools No.81 and No.283.
In the 2024–2025 academic year, two students became international award winners: Rustamova Durdona won 1st place, and Samiyeva Setora won 3rd place in an international essay competition. Two teachers received Korea Foundation scholarships. Nine students won 100% GKS master’s scholarships (the highest number in the Republic), ten teachers won professional development grants from Sunchon University, and twenty teachers received KOICA seminar-training grants.
The department has established charitable support and a departmental scholarship. In the 2024–2025 academic year, one student’s tuition fee was fully paid, and two students received departmental scholarships and six-month TOPIK course vouchers for academic excellence and active participation in community work.
