Аbout the Department of the Theory of Translation English

In 1994, the Translation Faculty was established at UzSWLU. Professor of the Uzbekistan State World Languages University, PhD in Philology, an outstanding scientist who made a great contribution to the development of translation studies, the author of about 10 teaching aids and textbooks, more than 100 papers, and the scientific supervisor of more than 15 PhD reserchers Omon Muminov was appointed Dean of the Faculty. In 2002-2012 – Head of the Department of Theory and Practice of English Translation at UzSWLU, 2012-2017 – Professor of the Department of Translation Studies at UzSWLU. The department conducts theoretical and practical classes on translation issues, and also implements tasks related to the skills of written and oral translation. Omon Muminov was a brilliant scientist who brought translation studies in Uzbekistan to a new level. His textbooks and manuals, such as “English for translators”, “Translation history”, “Practical translation”, “A Guide to Consecutive Translation”, “Yozma tarjima” (“Written translation”), “Tarjima nazariyasi” (“Theory of translation”), are still considered the main textbooks in universities engaged in the training of translators and interpreters

The leading teachers of the department – Kh. Samigova, B. Kholbekova, L. Zuparova, A. Khamidov, D. Mirsagatova – have contributed to the development of the department. The teachers of the department have created many textbooks and teaching aids. In 2021-2022 academic year the department was divided into 2 directions: junior courses were separated into another department, and this department was named English Language Translation Theory Department. From 2022-2023 academic year Jamilya Abduganieva was appointed as the head of the Department. From 2024-2025 academic year the Departmetn is headed by Bakhodir Odilov, PhD in philology, associate professor.

At present 48 professors and lecturers work at the department. Two of them are foreign professors (USA and India). (There are 37 full-time professors and 11 associate professors, including 3 DSc in philology, professor, 4 PhD professors, 1 associate professor, 7 senior lecturers, 7 lecturers). In 2024-2025 academic year, the department staff published 110 scientific papers (43 in foreign journals, 67 in domestic journals), 2 textbooks and 10 teaching aids. In the 2024-2025 academic year, the departmental discussion of 7 theses was held. The department employs 55 independent researchers registered at the university.

Cultural and educational events and scientific seminars held by the English Language Translation Theory Department:

On September 4 of the current year, Begoyim Kholbekova, associate professor of the English Translation Theory Department, member of the Writers' Union of Uzbekistan, together with Alisher Turaev, a teacher of the department, attended a meeting dedicated to Knowledge Day at the Khalima Khudojberdiyeva Creative School in the city of Gulistan and held master classes there.

The Knowledge Day began with the national anthem of Uzbekistan. After that, school director Pokiza Akhmadjonova opened the event and gave the floor to Begoyim Kholbekova, Associate Professor of the English Translation Theory Department of the Uzbekistan State World Languages University, a well-known translator, to congratulate the students and their parents on the beginning of the new academic year. B. Kholbekova congratulated the students and their parents and expressed her sincere wishes, emphasizing in her speech the important role of youth in making our country one of the most developed countries in the world, the need for educated and purposeful youth for the future of the new Uzbekistan, their active participation in all aspects of our society. After that, it was time for the creative part. Then the first bell rang and independence lessons began. After the independence lessons, Begoyim Kholbekova and Alisher Turayev conducted master classes on English language and artistic translation for pupils of 10-11 grades. The master classes made a great impression on the pupils.

       On September 13 this year, professors and teachers of the English Translation Theory Department of the Translation Faculty of the Uzbekistan State World Languages University visited the Khalima Khudoyberdiyeva Creative School in the city of Gulistan, Syrdarya region.

The purpose of the visit was to ensure the implementation of the tasks provided for by paragraph “a” of part 5 of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On measures to further improve the activities of creative schools” № PQ-147 from April 1, 2024, the implementation of the Letter of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of the Republic of Uzbekistan № 3/15-52-989 from June 10, 2024, as well as the Olympiad to further improve cooperation with this creative school.

The Olympiad process was organized by the Dean of the Faculty of Translation U. Yuldoshev, Head of the English Language Translation Theory DepartmentB. Odilov, professors and teachers of this department D. Mirsagatova, N. Kurbanova, N. Sharipova, H. Batirova, F. Nematova, D. Sobirova and D. Khojabekova.

The results of this Olympiad were announced on September 16. In this connection, professors-teachers of the English Translation Theory Department of the Translation Faculty of the Uzbekistan State World Languages University Jalolov Furkat and Turaev Alisher visited the Creative School named after Halima Khudojberdiyeva in the city of Gulistan, Syrdarya region.

In order to further develop cooperation with this creative school and to honor the winners of the Olympiad, the university staff solemnly congratulated the winners of the Olympiad and presented the winners with memorable gifts and diplomas from the university administration.

 In October of this year, a festive event entitled “Teacher – the bright light of the world” was organized, dedicated to October 1 – Teacher and Mentor Day.

Rector Ilkhomjon Tukhtasinov opened the festive event, which was attended by the heads, teachers and staff of the university, and congratulated all the mentors on the holiday. After that, the honorable retired teachers were presented with holiday gifts. A video clip dedicated to the teachers and mentors was shown.

Professor of the English Language Translation Theory DepartmentKhushnuda Samigova and Associate Professor of our Department Begoyim Kholbekova were awarded honorary diplomas and memorable gifts by the Rector of our university.

The artists also congratulated the guests on the holiday and performed popular songs.

In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation No. 56 dated 12.02.2024, the Translation Department of UzSWLU together with the English Language Translation Theory Department held an international scientific-practical conference on “Translation Studies: Problems, Solutions and Prospects II” on November 20, 2024.

At the conference there was an exchange of opinions and experience on the issues of comparative linguistics, translation studies and intercultural dialogue, on topical problems of literary studies, modern approaches and prospects of teaching foreign languages, didactics of translation, use of new pedagogical technologies in the process of theoretical and practical teaching of foreign languages, improvement of foreign language teaching methodology. The conference was attended by industry specialists, leading scientists, professors, researchers, doctoral students, independent researchers, master's students and talented students.

The plenary session of the conference commenced with the playing of the National Anthem of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The event was officially opened by the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovations at the university, Otabek Yusupov.Following the opening, participants were presented with a video showcasing the history, achievements, and current accomplishments of the Translation Faculty. This was followed by an engaging exchange of views among the speakers on the conference’s central theme.Key reports were delivered by notable experts, including Professor Zahra Zaratti from the Islamic Republic of Iran, Professor Ahmad Al-Zubaidi from the Department of Theory and Practice of Arabic Translation, Lecturer Noto Kuniaki from the Department of Japanese Philology, and Senior Lecturer Ralph Schusler from the Department of Theory of English Translation, among others.The conference held particular significance for the youth and professionals in New Uzbekistan's translation industry, who are achieving remarkable success on the international stage.

On November 28, 2024, Associate Professor Begoyim Kholbekova, from the Department of Theory of Translation of the English Language at the Translation Faculty of the Uzbekistan State World Languages University, was honored with a Certificate of Recognition. The award, presented by Sirojiddin Said, Chairman of the Union of Writers of Uzbekistan, acknowledged her exceptional contributions to the skillful translation of national literature into English and its promotion abroad.

On January 22, an event focused on family relations was held at UzSWLU Translation Department. The event was organized under the initiative of F. Khabieva, the Dean’s Advisor on Women's Issues for the Translation Department. Attendees included University psychologist Z. Khairullaeva, associate professors from the Department of History of Uzbekistan – N. Bobojonova and N. Tolibova – Associate Professor of the Department of Theory of Translation of the English Language, B. Kholbekova, as well as faculty members.

The event, held under the motto My Beloved Daughter, featured specialists who provided valuable recommendations and advice on specific aspects of the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship. The psychologist shared insightful information about the psychological characteristics of interpersonal relationships, offering students practical advice.

On January 16, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh hosted an evening of Sharia and a translation competition aimed at promoting reading among young people in celebration of International Youth Day. The event was attended by staff members from our department, including Begoyim Kholbekova, Nilufar Kurbanova, Muhammad Musawwir, Durdona Khodjabekova, and Khusan Normatov.

On January 28, the Republican Scientific and Practical Conference titled Enlightened Women – The Support of Society was held. The event was organized on the initiative of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Zulaykho Makhkamova. Associate Professor and Knight of the Order of Friendship, Begoyim Kholbekova, represented our department at the conference.

 

In our country, significant efforts are being made to actively involve women in scientific activities, support their participation in software development, and encourage the implementation of their innovative ideas. Today, women continue to demonstrate remarkable dedication in raising children, contributing to various professional fields, and fostering the development of their local communities (mahallas). In recent years, numerous laws, decrees, and presidential resolutions have been adopted and implemented to improve the legal status of women and strengthen the institution of the family. These issues were particularly emphasized by the speakers at the event. At the conclusion of the event, active participants were recognized and awarded for their contributions.

On February 7, the Union of Writers of Uzbekistan held a forum titled Literary Translation: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow. Associate Professor of the Department of Theory of English Translation, Begoyim Kholbekova, participated in the forum.

On February 9, the 584th anniversary of the birth of the Sultan of World Poetry, Mir Alisher Navoi, was widely celebrated. Professors and teachers from the Department of Theory of English Translation, including Begoyim Kholbekova, Ralph Schusler, and Muhammad Musavvir, attended this prestigious event. The celebration was covered by the Dunyo Bo‘ylab channel.

On February 8, a spiritual and educational event dedicated to the extraordinary life and work of the great thinker, poet, and statesman Mir Alisher Navoi was held at the Center for Retraining and Advanced Training of Teaching Staff at the Uzbekistan State World Languages University.

The event featured prominent figures such as Begoyim Kholbekova, a member of the Writers' Union of Uzbekistan, a renowned translator, and recipient of the Order of Friendship, as well as Ozoda Bekmurodova, a famous poetess, journalist, and deputy khokim of the Yashnabad district on women's issues.

During the event, they recited some of Navoi’s finest ghazals, the sultan of ghazal poetry, to students enrolled in advanced training courses from various regions of the country. They also provided commentary on the profound meanings of the ghazals and shared their English translations.

Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions about Navoi’s works and participate by reading ghazals from his literary masterpieces. The event was both enriching and enlightening for all participants.

On February 17, 2025, the Dean of the Translation Faculty at the Uzbekistan State World Languages University, Ulugbek Yuldoshev, and the Head of the Department of English Translation Theory, Bakhodir Odilov, visited the Embassy of Bangladesh to meet with students currently completing their internships at the embassy.

The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of Bangladesh, Dr. Mohammad Mansur Islam, embassy representative Mr. Nazmul Alam, embassy translator Ikboljonova Munavvarbonu, and the student interns.

During the meeting, the Embassy of Bangladesh expressed its satisfaction with the knowledge and skills demonstrated by the interns. The representatives of the embassy highly praised the students for their professional approach, accuracy in translation, and sense of responsibility in their work.

The embassy particularly highlighted the students’ honesty, dedication, and active contribution to intercultural dialogue. Beyond translation and documentation tasks, the interns were commended for their participation in official events, where they made a significant contribution to the embassy's daily operations. Their strong communication skills, initiative, and ability to solve problems quickly were also highly valued.

The leadership of the embassy emphasized the importance of this internship program and expressed a keen interest in continuing effective cooperation with the students in the future.

Additionally, during the meeting with the Ambassador of Bangladesh, discussions were held regarding the development of educational cooperation, particularly the possibility of attracting volunteer teachers from Bangladesh. This initiative aims to expand scientific and academic ties between the two countries, train qualified personnel, and improve the overall quality of education.

In the second part of the VII meeting of the Council of the Uzbekistan State World Languages University, a traditional ceremony for awarding academic degrees was held. Among those recognized was Okila Baijanova, a teacher from the English Language Translation Theory Departmentat the Translation Faculty.

On February 19, 2025, a meeting of the Translation and Literary Relations Department of the Women's Creative Council "Ovoz+" (Voice+) took place at the Writers' Union. During the meeting, a plan for future activities was agreed upon, tasks were outlined, and proposals were reviewed. The leadership of the union also held a brief discussion with the participants.

Additionally, B.A. Kholbekova, along with two foreign professors—D.Sh. Gasanova, N.A. Yusupova, A.A. Gamidov, and Sh.F. Abdullaev—regularly participate in popular TV shows such as "Omon-Omon" and "Mavzu".

In February 2025, 3rd-year students of the Translation Faculty participated in a selection internship. Throughout the month, professors and teachers from the English Language Translation Theory Departmentvisited the internship sites to supervise and support the students.

Today, the development of the field of translation has gained significant importance in our country. This includes training qualified translators, enhancing the prestige of the Uzbek language by producing high-quality translations across various fields, and promoting the unique culture and creativity of the Uzbek people on an international stage. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference, the rector of Uzbek State University of World Languages, Ilkhomzhon Tukhtasinov, emphasized that the significance of the conference lies in the fact that today's event serves as a convenient scientific platform for discussing problems in the field of translation theory and practice.

During the conference, current problems of modern linguistics and translation were discussed, ways to solve them were considered, and directions for further work were outlined. In particular, scientific lectures were heard on current problems of linguistics, modern linguistic trends, linguistic translation studies, problems of literary translation, comparative typology and comparative linguistics. At the same time, the scientific and theoretical side of translator training was discussed, as well as such extremely topical issues as the development of cooperation in the field of creating textbooks, teaching aids, manuals on translation theory that correspond to the spirit of the times and meet today's demands, various dictionaries, developing recommendations for creating materials for teaching translation, training personnel in this area. More than 200 scientific articles were presented at the conference, which were published in the form of an electronic scientific collection of conference proceedings with an ISBN number. In this regard, the collection was posted in the international Research Gate system, and scientific articles were indexed in the international Google Scholar database.

The purpose of this collection is to present the scientific results of professors, teachers and researchers conducting scientific research in the field of translation, to expand their knowledge and experience, and to promote dialogue between foreign and local scientists.
