Department history: The Department of Linguistics and English Literature was established at the Uzbek State University of World Languages in 2013 under the supervision of Doctor of Philology, Associate Professor Galieva Margarita Rafaelovna.

The composition of the department:

The main goal of the department is to train qualified specialists who meet the requirements of educational standards, based on a number of principles set out in the "Law on Education" and the "National Training Program", including the humanization of education, its secularization, technology integration, continuity and cultural development, as well as student–centered learning.

The main tasks of the department are:

to carry out practical and other types of training at a high methodological and professional level, provided for by curricula drawn up in accordance with state educational standards of higher education; development of educational programs in the subjects of the department and submission for approval in accordance with the established procedure, as well as their constant updating;
within the framework of international cooperation and joint projects, share experiences with foreign universities and apply advanced technologies and methods of teaching English in the classroom;
the development of science at the department and the involvement of all professors and teachers in this process; the creation of the necessary conditions for the teaching staff of the department to conduct research work;
preparation of textbooks, teaching aids and demonstration manuals and discussion of educational literature for subsequent publication;
to enrich students' scientific knowledge on theoretical scientific issues in accordance with their specialty, to improve the skills of analyzing linguistic materials and conducting scientific research in the field of linguistics and methodology;
to teach students theoretical and practical sciences, as well as foreign languages on the basis of interdisciplinary, integrated, personality-oriented and communicative-cognitive approaches, directing their communicative-pragmatic, discursive, cultural, social and professional competencies to a broad and comprehensive formation;
managing the process of preparing master's theses, research papers of doctoral students and independent researchers, as well as discussing completed research papers and developing recommendations for subsequent stages and increasing the scientific potential of the department;
effective organization of training sessions and objective assessment of students' knowledge within the framework of a credit-modular system; creation of conditions to ensure an inextricable link between theory and practice;
to study, generalize and disseminate the work experience of professors and teachers, to master new pedagogical and information technologies and apply them in the educational process;
to work with talented students, prepare them for Olympiads and various competitions, enrich the forms and methods of scientific research and independent work of students;
to participate in the preparation of the necessary educational and methodological literature in accordance with the requirements of non-governmental educational institutions;
consideration and approval of individual plans of the teaching staff of the department in terms of educational, teaching and methodological, research and mentoring student activities;


Scientific direction of the department:

Planned research work at the Department of Linguistics and English Literature is carried out in the following priority areas:

• conducting scientific research in the field of modern linguistics, cognitive linguistics, cognitive stylistics, linguoculturology, linguopragmatics, text linguistics;

• conducting scientific research on English literature, literary criticism, comparative literature;

• conducting scientific research in the field of methods of teaching English, the use of ICT tools in teaching English;

Achievements of the department:

• The Department of Linguistics and English Literature has implemented 5 foreign projects within the framework of international grant programs of the European Union (Tempus, Erasmus+) and the British Council. Within the framework of these projects, 10 teachers and 7 undergraduates of the department studied at Aston University (Great Britain), Stirling University, Warwick University (Great Britain), Freiburg Pedagogical University (Germany), Caen University (France), Tyumen State University, Voronezh State University (Russia). Currently, the teachers of the department are working on the implementation of the international project "English as a school subject: learning effective practices from primary school teachers of basic English" within the framework of the British Council program;

• Under the leadership of Professor D.U. Ashurova, there is a scientific school on "Cognitive stylistics". Within the framework of the scientific school, 4 doctoral (DSc) and 14 PhD theses have been defended.

• The Department has established cooperation with a number of leading foreign universities, in particular, with Aston University, Stirling University, Freiburg Pedagogical University, Kaen University, Voronezh State University, Tyumen State University;

• In 2016-2024, the teachers of the department prepared and published 10 textbooks and teaching aids, 5 monographs;

• During 2019-2024, 2 doctoral and 5 candidate dissertations were defended under the guidance of professors of the associate professors of the department (D.U. Ashurova, E.D. Muratova, M.R. Galieva).;

• 100% of the professors and teachers of the department have international certificates of proficiency in a foreign language (C1);

• Associate Professor of the Department D.R. Ruzmatova took part in the competition announced by the Agency for Innovative Development of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of the Republic of Uzbekistan within the framework of the program "Short-term scientific internships of young scientists in leading foreign scientific organizations" and became the winner of the 3-month internship program. From September 2 to December 2, 2024, she is doing an internship at Aston University (UK).

 Shapsanova F.M. completed a scientific internship from October 1 to November 1, 2024 at the University of Reading (Great Britain).

• Researchers of the department Pulatova D.F., Yartseva S.V. and Tursunova M.V. have successfully defended their scientific dissertations at the department and are preparing to receive a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in philological sciences after defending their scientific papers.

• The department holds a leading position at the university in terms of the number of scientific articles in foreign scientific journals and the citation index.
