1. Date of establishment of the department: The Department of Theoretical German Studies is one of the main departments within the structure of the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages. The department was established in the 2021-2022 academic year as part of the Department of Theory and Practice of the German Language.

2. Name of the department head: Ziyadullaev Ilhom Oblakulovich.

3. Number of teachers working at the department: Currently, there are 20 faculty members working at the department. Of these, 17 are full-time employees, 2 are internal adjuncts, and 1 is an external adjunct.

5. Collaborations with the department: Currently, over 978 students study German as their primary foreign language, and around 2000 students study it as a second foreign language. The number of students enrolled in the Master's program in Linguistics (German) is 20.

To foster international collaboration, the department actively cooperates with universities and international organizations in Germany, including Mainz University, Ruhr University Bochum, Freiburg University, Heidelberg Pedagogical University, Mannheim German Language Institute, Goethe Institute, the German Embassy, and the DAAD. Several international projects have been carried out within this cooperation. Specifically, more than 30 German experts have been invited to the university with the help of these institutions and organizations, conducting lectures on current topics in German Studies and organizing seminars on modern methods of teaching German, developing new programs, and creating textbooks.

In the spring of 2023, 3 German language teachers and 2 students participated in academic mobility at Bochum University in Germany. In February 2024, Asrayev Sadriddin, a faculty member of the Department of Theoretical German Studies, returned after completing professional development at Heidelberg Pedagogical University. From May 4 to May 16, 2024, 12 students from the Faculty of Romance-Germanic Philology and the Faculty of Translation, along with 3 PhD students, participated in internships at Mainz and Heidelberg Pedagogical Universities in Germany.

 

4. According to the agreement between Uzbekistan State University of World Languages and Heidelberg Pedagogical University, 4th-year student Pezsenova Gulnur returned after studying in Germany as part of the academic mobility program during the 7th semester of the 2024-2025 academic year.

Within the framework of the Erasmus mobility program between UzSWLU and Ruhr University Bochum, 5 students have already completed their studies.

Over the past years, more than 20 students and over 10 faculty members have become winners of competitions announced by the German Embassy, DAAD, and the Goethe Institute, which gave them the opportunity to participate in language teaching, master’s programs, and professional development courses at various German universities.

6. Achievements of the department: One of the partners of the department is the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), with which, according to the current agreement, German DAAD lecturer Johanna Mayer has been teaching students for 3 years.

The department also hosts the Uzbekistan Association of German Language Teachers, which unites German language teachers and coordinates their activities. This association organizes professional development seminars for young German language teachers who have started their careers in various secondary and higher educational institutions in Uzbekistan.

In March and June 2024, the Department of Theoretical German Studies and the Uzbekistan Association of German Language Teachers organized international scientific-practical conferences on the topics of "Current Issues of Teaching German in Central Asia" and "Current Issues of Comparative Philology." The conferences were attended by approximately 120 scholars from over 10 countries.
