History of the Department:

The Department of Uzbek Language and Literature at O‘zDJTU began its activity in 1960 at the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages as the "Uzbek Language and Literature" department. In 1992, Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages merged with the Republican Institute of Pedagogy of Russian Language and Literature, leading to the establishment of O‘zDJTU. In 1993, the "Comparative Grammar" department (headed by Associate Professor, PhD S. Soliyev), the "Uzbek Language and Literature" department (headed by Associate Professor, PhD Z. Soliyeva), and the "Uzbek Language" department (headed by Associate Professor, PhD A. Mamatov) were merged into a single department named "Uzbek Language" at the university level. In accordance with the letter from the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, dated November 21, 2019, No. 87-04-2665, the name of the department was changed to the "Department of Uzbek Language and Literature." The department was led by Associate Professor, PhD A. Mamatov from 1993 to 2001, Professor, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences X. Muxitdinova from 2001 to 2012, Associate Professor, PhD N. Jiyanova from 2012 to 2015, and since 2015, the department has been led by Associate Professor, Doctor of Philosophy in Pedagogy Z. Salisheva.

Department Composition:

Currently, the department has 30 professors and teachers, of which 23 are on permanent staff (4 professors, 11 PhDs (3 professors, 9 associate professors), 8 senior teachers and assistants). Seven teachers are on external joint positions (3 PhDs, 4 teachers and trainee-teachers), and 1 teacher works on an internal joint basis. 65% of the department's staff holds scientific potential.

Research Areas of the Department:

The department conducts research in the following areas:

  • Linguocultural studies, linguopoetics, and linguodidactics in the context of digitalization of education.

  • Current issues in Uzbek linguistics.

All department staff are involved in research based on their assigned topics, and the results are discussed at monthly departmental meetings.

Achievements of the Department:

Department professors publish their research results in major scientific journals, including those indexed in Scopus and Web of Science.
Associate Professor Y. Avlakulov, Doctor of Philosophy Z. Salisheva, and Senior Lecturer Z. Usmonova participated in the practical project "Creating multimedia products for intensive teaching of Uzbek to foreign language speakers" (2020-2022), which received 5 copyrights. This project won 1st place in the category of "Best software product and developments" at the "Mother Tongue - National Pride" contest.
The department also provides methodological assistance in opening Uzbek language centers in Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, and at the Southern Federal University.

Associate Professor B. Qarayev has been teaching Uzbek to students at the Institute of International Relations and Social-Political Sciences of the Moscow State Linguistic University (MSLU) since 2010.

Department staff have actively conducted lectures and masterclasses for students of Kazan Federal University, Southern Federal University, and South Kazakhstan University named after M. Auezov.

The department collaborates with leading international universities, such as:

Other Achievements and Projects of the Department:

The department organizes various scientific-practical conferences, such as the international conference "Problems of teaching Uzbek as a state and foreign language in the era of digitalization" (April 2024). Professors also participate in international forums held in Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Turkey.

Role of Students and Teachers:

The department actively supports the scientific development of students, encouraging their participation in conferences and publications. Department staff prepare textbooks and monographs and actively publish articles in scientific journals.
