British Council Leadership Paid a Visit to Uzbekistan State World Languages University

On February 9, 2026, the Director of the British Council office in Uzbekistan, Mr. Michael Houlgate, and Deputy Director Ms. Jamilya Gulyamova paid a visit to Uzbekistan State World Languages University (USWLU).

 

 

As part of the visit, the guests met with the Rector of USWLU, Mr. Ilkhomjon Tukhtasinov. During the meeting, detailed information was provided on the university’s activities, its standing in international rankings, academic programs, and established partnerships with foreign higher education institutions and organizations. Gratitude was also expressed to the British Council leadership for the practical support rendered within the framework of the PRESETT program and the University Governance project implemented with the participation of British experts.

Rector Ilkhomjon Tukhtasinov put forward proposals to actively involve specialists and lecturers from the United Kingdom in the university’s educational process, as well as to explore opportunities for professional development of USWLU English language teachers at higher education institutions in the UK. In addition, an initiative was proposed to organize a Summer Camp program at USWLU for British students. A video presentation highlighting the university’s activities was also shown to the guests.

Deputy Director Jamilya Gulyamova placed particular emphasis on organizing future seminars and training sessions for English language teachers, holding an international conference on the use of artificial intelligence in English language teaching, and engaging British experts in these events.

 

 

British Council Director Michael Houlgate expressed his readiness to support initiatives aimed at further improving English language teaching at USWLU, which is considered a leading higher education institution in Uzbekistan in the field of foreign language education. He also noted that the United Kingdom has become a participant in the Erasmus+ program this year, opening additional opportunities for cooperation with British universities in this area.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties reached an agreement to further expand cooperation in the field of foreign language teaching in Uzbekistan through joint events, seminars, and training programs.
