On October 15, the Rector of UzSWLU, I. Tukhtasinov, welcomed Stephen Corbett, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Portsmouth, UK.
During the meeting, detailed information was provided on UzSWLU’s activities, international collaborations, and ongoing efforts to train qualified personnel in English language studies.
Ilkhomjon Madaminovich proposed further development of cooperation with the University of Portsmouth, including student and researcher exchanges, professional development for faculty, and implementation of joint educational programs. S. Corbett highlighted the positive outcomes of launching a joint master's program in TESOL English under a 1+1 format. He noted, however, that the main challenge is the high tuition fees, amounting to £16,000 per year for international students and £9,500 for local students. Additionally, he mentioned that opportunities to reduce tuition fees for program participants would be explored. In the second phase, students could work as teachers to partially cover the tuition fees through their earnings.
The UzSWLU rector also suggested implementing a joint 3+1 bachelor's program, in which University of Portsmouth faculty would be invited to teach at UzSWLU during the first semester of the fourth year, followed by student placements at the University of Portsmouth for the second semester. This approach could significantly reduce tuition fees. S. Corbett acknowledged the possibility of involving UzSWLU faculty in this process as well.
Moreover, there was an exchange of ideas regarding student exchange programs, internships, and practical training, including summer and winter camps, which would further strengthen relations.
Stephen Corbett indicated that after reaching an agreement on financial issues, it would be feasible to develop and agree upon the joint education program’s curriculum by January 2025, with the aim of signing an agreement.
The parties agreed to discuss organizational and financial matters online and to work on drafting the relevant documents as soon as possible.
