January 24-International Education Day celebration was established by a resolution of the UN General Assembly on December 3, 2018, supported by 58 member states. The document notes that education plays a key role in creating sustainable societies and contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. The right to education is enshrined in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of human rights. It encourages free primary education. The 1989 Convention on the rights of the child contains a law on the obligation of states to ensure that higher education is open to all.
International Education Day has an important educational function. This helps to draw attention to a serious problem that every fifth child around the world does not have access to education. According to UNESCO, so far, 262 million children and young people are out of school, and 617 million children and adolescents lack basic reading and mathematics skills. Less than 40% of girls in Sub-Saharan Africa have completed primary secondary education and approximately, four million refugee children and young people have been living without access to schooling.
